EN CAMINO
After losing his leg in a tragic motorcycle accident, Samuel Maddaus, a veteran amputee and outdoor enthusiast, embarks on the journey of a lifetime: biking from Alaska to Patagonia, a 16,000-mile journey that he hopes will inspire other amputees to find their own strength within the natural world.
The Details
This documentary aims to detail Sam’s 16,000+ mile journey from Alaska to Patagonia as well as inspire others experiencing the struggles of limb-loss.
Why this film?
Sam’s journey touches on many aspects of life as an amputee and the unique difficulties of doing an expedition like this as someone experiencing limb loss. En Camino also highlights the world of limb loss by shining a light on the global disparities in prosthetic care. The World Health Organization estimates that 35–40 million people worldwide need prosthetic or orthotic services, yet only 1 in 10 has access. On his ride, Sam highlights this reality in Guatemala, where remote native communities experience higher rates of limb loss but have little access to treatment. By working with a nonprofit that provides prosthetics to these regions, he exposes both the urgency of the problem and the power of local efforts creating change.
Likewise, in the U.S. alone, there are over 2 million people living with limb loss and another 28 million at risk of amputation surgery. Of these individuals, 1 in 3 experience depression. According to Hanger Clinic, chances are you’ll encounter someone who has faced—or is currently facing—this difficult journey. That is why Sam’s story is so important to tell.
We believe this film deserves to reach a wide audience, with the hope that it will not only inspire change for other amputees, but also others striving to overcome their own challenges or make a difference for the global limb loss community.
